Davangere Travel Guide


Davangere is located on the Bangalore-Pune railroad. Davanagere is a market for grain and cotton and is home to a major textile industry. There is a machine-tool factory in the suburbs. In the late 18th cent., Haidar Ali, ruler of Karnataka (Mysore), gave Davanagere to the Maratha leader Apoji Ram, who encouraged merchants to settle there. A major road and rail junction, it supports a large-scale textile industry and is a trading centre for cotton and grain. The surrounding villages produce hand loomed cotton and wool. Several colleges affiliated with the University of Mysore are situated at Davangere.

There are several tourist places in Davangere. The Durga temple has a semicircular apse, and a sanctum, circled by a richly carved colonnaded passageway. The Hutchamalli temple, the Ravalphadi Cave temple, the Konthi temple complex, the Jain Meghuthi temple and the two storied Buddhist temple are the site worth visiting in Davanagere. Annamalai wildlife sanctuary is about 90-km from Davanagere and is situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Western Ghats near Pollachi. Black Thunder Amusement Park, a water sports and amusement park is situated about 40-km from Davanagere on the Ooty main Road. VOC Park is the most appropriate place to go with children. The Davanagere Corporation maintains the park. The Park houses a mini Zoo, models of prehistoric dinosaurs, Children' Train, Swing, Slider, Seesaw and other play equipment and is more like an amusement park for the children. The park has a stretch of grass patch conveniently mowed to sit on. About 12-km away from Davanagere railway station, is the Marudhamalai temple of Lord Muruga. The temple is situated on the Marudamalai mountain and is one of the most visited temples in the region. Perur Patteeswaraswamy temple built by Karikala Cholan is located 7-km west of Davanagere near river Noyyal.

There are extensive airlines facilities to Davangere from Karnataka. The road to the airport could be taken by a car. There are rail networks from all major cities like Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore. The road networks are also very well developed.
