Kundremukh Travel Guide
The park is situated in South Kanara and Chickmagalur districts over an area of 600sq.km. The nearest town is Chickmagalur at a distance of 80km. The nearest railhead and airport are at Mangalore at a distance of 180km.
The terrain of the park is hilly and undulating. The forest type is semi evergreen. The fauna found are leopard, tiger, sloth bear, Indian gaur, lion tailed macaque, sambar, mouse deer and a host of reptiles. Lion-tailed macaque is of special attraction.
November to May is the best season for visiting the park. There is forest rest house at Samshe and at Kudremukh, or Horse Face Range, gets its name from the unique shape of its peak. The broad hills, 95km south-west of Chikmagalur town, overlook the Arabian Sea and are chained to one another with deep valleys and steep precipices. As yet undiscovered by tourists, Kudremukh is a trekker’s paradise. Let the wonderland of lush green forests interspersed with rivers, grassy slopes, captivating cascades, rare orchids, caves, ruins, and traces of old civilizations amaze you as you trek your way through it. The Lakya Dam located near the Kudremukh project area is an interesting spot in the Kudremukh range. Ganga Moola is another scenic spot in the Bhagawathi Forest; you can reach it by trekking.
Best season:
October to May, immediately after the monsoon when everything is lush green, and the rivers, streams and waterfalls are at their best.
Location and Area:
Located in the Western Ghats in the Districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur. 600.32 sq. km.
Flora and Fauna:
Mostly evergreen and semi-evergreen forests with shoal–grassland habitat at elevations above 1400m.
Mammals:
They include the tiger, leopard, wild dog, jackal, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, giant flying squirrel, porcupine, and the mongoose.
Birds:
The Malabar trogon, great pied hornbill, Malabar whistling thrush, and the imperial pigeon can be found.
Reptiles :
Snakes and tortoises are found here.
